Newborn Session | Tips

These little ones grow so quickly!

Here is some info on newborn sessions, some tips/ideas.

Clothes:

A tight fit neutral outfit can be great to start with, try this on first to make sure it fits! Loose fitting clothes can be tricky to work with. Thin blankets/hats are great to add the colour and variety. Naked baby with diaper on is also great! If there is a particular outfit you want to have him photographed in this is a great third option!

Mom & Dad

• Wear neutral colors like creams, mild tones, and soft hues for intimate portraits. Black/white can work too! Avoid logos/patterns

The Space:

A room in the home that has lots of natural light is great. Open up all the blinds! We often will use the bed - which can look great with just white sheets. Remove any additional clutter from around the bed. I will bring blankets and baskets to also create a little natural light studio for the close ups of just baby. If you can pump the heat up or have a space heater running, this can really help keep baby sleeping. A blow dryer can also be helpful to blow on baby during clothes changes to keep baby asleep.

Props:

Baby shoes, ultra sound photo, wedding rings, favourite little stuffy, swaddles, fluffy or knit blankets, little knit hats (make sure they are not a loose fit!) can all be great - but also not necessary! Ill bring baskets, some neutral blankets and a neutral swaddle that can be used.

Timing your feeds for a sleepy baby:

If you can, avoid giving them a full meal in the one to two hours before your session. If they seem hungry, try to give them a small snack to get them through. Then, slightly before your session, you can feed them a full meal and expect a happy, tired baby in return.

Most photo sessions last around 90minutes, which leaves plenty of time to refuel if your child wakes up expecting a snack. Just make sure to have an extra bottle on hand if you use formula.

About 30 minutes before the session, change your baby’s diaper into a loose (but not too loose), clean diaper and swaddle them. Since most photographers prefer babies to be naked during their session, undressing them beforehand is a timesaver. It also means you won’t disrupt their sleep cycle by trying to get their onesie off. A loose diaper is best because it will avoid creating diaper marks around their waist.

Locations

We love using your home for newborn sessions (morning is great for these.)

Outdoor golden hour sessions are lovely as well (1.5 hours before sunset is ideal.)

In your home, we usually use the master bedroom. We bring some blankets and baskets and utilize your bed for the close ups of baby and family photos too.

Below is an example of an outdoor photo session.

What to wear to your session

When choosing your outfits - clothes that compliment one another is best! For example, if someone is wearing a patterned shirt - you may want to have the other person in something solid with a colour from the pattern. Remember parents are in these sessions too!

Ladies.

Remember to remove any hair elastics or Fitbit/watch.

Guys- remember to remove your phone from your pockets.

Avoid logos/text on your clothes and hats.

For the babies: make sure the clothes you have for your newborn fit tight! Neutrals are great, white onesies in newborn size, a tight fitting swaddle blanket, a wool or patterned blanket for texture, little stuffies, bonnets/wool toques all look so cute in the photos! Naked is great too with strategic swaddle placement is great.

Testimonials

“We had fall family photos done by Ashley and they are by far the best pictures we’ve had of our family thus far. I appreciated her knowing the location and lighting and poses, as well as how well she put my kids and us at ease behind the camera. She really brought out the best of our family and we were more than happy with the results. Ashley is the perfect blend of friendliness with professionalism. I could tell she put in the extra effort giving us so many different poses and locations and then editing it”
