Family Session | Tips

The best images come when our families feel connected! We want to not only create beautiful images for you, but great memories to go with them.

We will still get those classic images of you all looking at the camera, because they have their place! These images go out on Christmas cards and social updates. The images that I personally love to display in my own home are the ones that communicate our connection.

Locations, Activities & Props

Photographers can have the knack to turn an otherwise ordinary spot into something extraordinary with the right lighting and posing guidance! Less manicured parks can create the look we are known for - we have lots of spots we can recommend. We also love visiting spots that are important to you!

We *love* golden hour which will give us that golden whimsical look we often show in our images. We always schedule these 1 hr sessions 1.5 hours before the sun is scheduled to go down. (Unless we are shooting in the mountains where the sun slips away earlier and we will suggest a time based on your location of choice.) Early morning for young families in the summer can be a great option for great lighting, and locations with shaded options can offer a great alternative option.

To create moments of connection, consider bringing along your favourite story books, a ball to throw, bubbles, a tea party set up, or we could simply go for a walk and let the kids pick flowers or climb the trees. Ice cream shops have become a favourite way to end sessions and can include photography too! Chasing, tickling the kiddos, exploring nature helps create beautiful photos and good memories. We will bring you to the spots with the proper lighting/look and then give direction for these candid moments. I like to get the posed, group photos done first while everyone is fresh and then get the kids doing some sort of activity the parents can participate in. This is great for both regular family sessions and extended family sessions. I always love to capture both.

This image was a recreation of a weddig photo where the kids were added to the pose. Created on their property.

We took images in the garden too!

What to expect from your session

You will have one photographer (possibly with an assistant) arrive at the location you've decided on, and we will shoot for an hour for a regular session or 90 minutes for an extended family session! We deliver 75 edited images/hr in an online gallery which you will receive within a month. We always aim to give you a quick preview within the next week.

What to wear to your session

When choosing your outfits - clothes that compliment one another is best! For example, if someone is wearing a patterned shirt - you may want to have the other person in something solid with a colour from the pattern.

We suggest planning the footwear you will wear in advance as this often gets forgotten.

Ladies.

Remember to remove any hair elastics or Fitbit/watch.

Guys- remember to remove your phone from your pockets.

Avoid logos/text on your clothes and hats.

Testimonials

“We had fall family photos done by Ashley and they are by far the best pictures we’ve had of our family thus far. I appreciated her knowing the location and lighting and poses, as well as how well she put my kids and us at ease behind the camera. She really brought out the best of our family and we were more than happy with the results. Ashley is the perfect blend of friendliness with professionalism. I could tell she put in the extra effort giving us so many different poses and locations and then editing it”
